    Windows Only Shows 10GB Space

Extend your Windows partition to use full disk space

Windows may only show 10GB of available space when initially installed on a KVM VPS. This is because the partition needs to be extended to use the full disk.

    Why This Happens

Windows installation images are typically created with a 10GB partition. Even if your VPS has more disk space, the partition needs to be manually extended after installation.

    Quick Fix Using Diskpart

    Step 1: Open Command Prompt

    Open Command Prompt as Administrator:

    • Press Windows key + X
    • Select "Command Prompt (Admin)" or "Windows PowerShell (Admin)"
    • Click "Yes" if prompted by User Account Control

    Step 2: Run Diskpart Commands

    Command Prompt
    diskpart
    select disk 0
    select partition 2
    extend filesystem

    Step 3: Verify the Change

Open File Explorer and check your C: drive. You should now see the full disk space available.

    Alternative Method: Disk Management GUI

If you prefer a graphical interface:

    1

    Open Disk Management

Press Windows key + X and select "Disk Management"
    2

    Right-click C: Drive

Right-click on your C: drive partition
    3

    Extend Volume

Select "Extend Volume..." from the context menu
    4

    Complete Wizard

Click "Next" through the wizard, accept default settings, and click "Finish"

    No Unallocated Space?

If you don't see unallocated space in Disk Management, there might be a recovery partition in the way. In this case, use the command-line method above or contact support for assistance.

    Troubleshooting

    Error: "The Parameter is Incorrect"

    This error usually means:

    • • You selected the wrong partition (should be partition 2, the main Windows partition)
    • • There's no unallocated space available to extend into
    • • The file system needs to be checked for errors first

Try running chkdsk /f first, then reboot and try again.

    Partition Won't Extend

If the partition won't extend, it might be because:

    • Recovery Partition in the Way: A small recovery partition after your Windows partition
    • Already Extended: The partition is already using all available space
    • Disk Errors: File system errors preventing the extension

    After a VPS Upgrade

If you've upgraded your VPS to a larger disk size, you'll need to follow the same process to extend the Windows partition to use the additional space.

    Best Practice

Always extend the partition immediately after installation or upgrade to avoid confusion about available disk space.

    Multiple Partitions

If you want to create multiple partitions instead of extending C:, you can use Disk Management to:

    1

    Right-click Unallocated Space

In Disk Management, right-click on unallocated space
    2

    New Simple Volume

    Select "New Simple Volume"
    3

    Follow Wizard

Follow the wizard to create additional partitions (D:, E:, etc.)
